With parental controls in place, families can set limits on their kids’ screen time, filter out inappropriate content, keep track of their kids’ activities online, and help keep their children safer in an increasingly technologically advanced world. Not only that, but the three largest technology firms in the United States (Apple, Google, and Microsoft) provide excellent free tools that operate natively on almost all of the devices and accounts that you already use as well.
Each of these tools was designed to accommodate your child’s development, starting out as simple time limit settings for your younger children all the way to more extensive usage reporting and communication controls for your teenage kids.
The best part? No extra apps or subscriptions are required. All three tools are updated regularly by their parent companies, with strong privacy protections and easy setup for parents. They cover screen-time limits, app restrictions, web filtering, location sharing (with consent), and activity insights. Choosing the right one depends mostly on the devices your family uses most.
Apple Screen Time (iOS, iPadOS, macOS)
Best for families fully in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, Mac). Key strengths:
1. Extremely detailed app and category limits (e.g., 30 minutes/day on games, 1 hour on social media).
2. Downtime restricts nearly all applications besides those that have been selected by the user during specified times.
3. Communication Limits allow parents to restrict who children can contact via phone or text message during Downtime.
4. Communication Safety scans for and blurs images of any nudity sent through Messages or AirDrop, and also gives the parent/s notification if there is a nudity in a message.
5. Family Sharing allows one parent to manage multiple devices for multiple children.
6. Always Allowed apps + “one more hour” requests that require parent approval.
7. Strong content restrictions for movies, music, web (Safari), and explicit language.
Basic Setup (takes around five minutes to do):

2. Enter a screen time passcode(the one used for device may not be used for your child’s screen time).
3. Go to App Limits => Add an App Limit => Select category or individual Apps => Select how much you would like your child to be able to use each day.

Microsoft Family Safety (Windows, Xbox, web dashboard, Android/iOS via Microsoft account)
Best for families with Windows PCs, Xbox consoles, or Microsoft 365 usage. Key strengths:
1. Set screen time limits to apply on both the Windows PC and the Xbox.
2. Filter what children can see when browsing the web with Microsoft Edge, including filtering out access to adult content and limited allow/block lists for their browsing.
3. View a report of how many hours are spent on each app/website.
4. Location sharing (opt-in).
5. Remote device lock.
6. Content restrictions for games, apps, and movies via Microsoft Store age ratings.
The steps to get up and running are as follows and will take about 5–10 min.

2. Add your child by inviting his or her Microsoft account (or create one if your child does not have one) and have your child accept the invitation.
3. Sign into their Microsoft account on their PC/Xbox, and their settings will be synced automatically.
4. Set daily and scheduled screen-time limits in the web dashboard; these limits apply to both the PC and Xbox.
5. The Edge browser on your child's device enforces an adult-content block, and you can add additional blocked sites through the web dashboard.
6. On your child's device go to Settings > Privacy > Location and enable location sharing so you can see their device location in the web dashboard.
7. To lock a Windows or Xbox device remotely, go to family.microsoft.com, select your child's profile, click on ''More Options,'' then ''Lock Device.''
Quick Decision Guide
1. Complete apple home (iPhone, iPad, Mac) = apple screen time is most complete and integrated solution.
2. Most Android phones plus Chromebooks = Google family link provides location tracking (best) and supervision of Youtube.
3. Windows PC & Xbox = Microsoft family safety has best coverage for PC/console locations.
4. Mixed devices = Strongest native app for each device/platform with basic report from MS Family Safety web dashboard is available for all usage.
All three have been free, receive regular updates for security and privacy, and usability and improved child privacy protections have increased in the past few years.
